Jack Trice was known as a very smart and studious young man who had an incredible work ethic he inherited from his family. The Hawkeyes have posted 27 runs combined in the two road wins at Northwestern.
There is not another team in the bracket that can do more to help themselves with a win Saturday afternoon, and do more to hurt themselves with an early exit. The Sooners are, for the moment, either the fourth No. 1 seed and headed to a pair of games in nearby Kansas City, or a No. 2 seed headed 12 hours up I-35 to open play in Minneapolis.
The following Tuesday all classes were postponed and a funeral service was held for Jack Trice before 4,000 students and faculty members on the central grounds of campus.
Now the excitement has risen in Ames as the Iowa State basketball return the core group of players led by future NBA lottery pick, Craig Brackins. Alongside Brackins will be the best recruiting class assembled since McDermott’s arrival on campus.
Kyle Singler needs six more points to reach 600 points for the third straight season. Only Art Heyman and Christian Laettner have accomplished that feat in school history.
Chris Allen brings 3 years of expertise from his time at Michigan State. He’s performed in 14 tournament games and two Final Fours. He can not merely shoot from the outside, but can also be a defensive stopper.
Mevlin Ejim and Jordan Railey each ought to see time as returning letterman while Royce White, Anthony Booker, and Percy Gibson will all make an impression as newcomers.
The next three games will set the tone for the remainder of the season. Arkansas at Dallas, Oklahoma State at home, and Kansas State at Manhattan. The game with the Razorbacks, under another second-year coach in a rebuilding program, promises to be a great football game but a loss for the Ags. The Cowboys, fuelled by oil money from T. Boone Pickens, have a much-hyped offense and defense, and could well be another loss, even at the friendly confines of Kyle. Under the “second coming” of Bill Snyder it’s too early for another “miracle,” even at the field already named for the coach, and the Ags should come out with a win.
As experienced as they are on offense the Cyclones are just as green on defense. Goner are all three starting linebackers from a year ago, including the Big 12 leading tackler Jesse Smith. Jake Knott and A.J. Klein are expected to start on the outside, while a junior college transfer will fill the middle linebacker position. The unit also lacks experience in the trenches, Bailey Johnson started eight games at nose tackle and Patrick Neal made nine starts at the end position. The secondary is solid with Leonard Johnson and Ter’Ran Benton at the corners and Strong Safety David Sims.
