How to Make Maryland Crab Soup ~ Crabmeat Recipe

1 pound crabmeat
1 can of baby clams and juice
1 cup diced onions
1 cup diced celery
1 cup diced carrots
1 cup corn
1 cup lima beans
1 cup diced potatoes
1 – 28 oz can diced tomatoes
4 cups chicken broth
1 bay leaf
2 minced cloves garlic
1-3 tsp. old bay seasoning
1 tbsp. Worcestershire sauce
fresh chopped parsley
salt and black pepper
olive oil

In a soup pan on medium heat add olive oil,
onions, celery, carrots, minced garlic and
salt and black pepper.
Stir and cook for 5 minutes.

Add tomatoes, juice of baby clams, Worcerstershire
sauce and Old Bay Seasoning (add a little at a time).
Stir and turn up heat to bring up to a simmer.
Add chicken broth, corn, lima beans and bay leaf.
Bring up to a simmer, reduce heat, cover and cook
for 30 minutes.

Add potatoes, baby clams and crabmeat.
Give soup a stir and bring back up to a simmer
and cook for 10-15 minutes until potatoes are tender.
Give a taste test along the way.
Add a handful of fresh chopped parsley at the end,
stir and serve.

  1. Clam juice is not an ingredient of Maryland Crab soup. Lived on the Chesapeake Bay
    for 47 years and clam juice is not an ingredient. Also Traditional Maryland Crab Soup has MD. Blue Crab half's and Crab Claws in it.

  2. I'm a Marylander and I've never put clams in the soup. It seems odd to me, but clam juice I'd definitely add. I bet the clams would be a great addition to flavoring the soup. I'm going to try adding them next time! Great recipe Tess! Also love the whole pound of meat you add! That's how you do it! Yum!!!

  4. This soup looks fantastic! I know it probably defeats the purpose, but would you have any substitute for the crab meat? Those fake 'krab' sticks would probably ruin the soup…?
